With the opening of the new J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the original Getty Villa Museum was rededicated to house exclusively Mr. Getty’s antiquities collection. As Executive Architect, SPF:a completely renovated the old museum and added over 100,000 square feet of new, state-of-the-art offices, laboratories, food services, and public amenities to the Malibu Campus, which now houses the Getty Conservation Institute. The new entry court is through the outdoor amphitheatre, and guests now enjoy an antiquities gift shop & book store, café, and small theater for presentations and lectures. The renovation also raised fire, safety, and ADA compliance levels to current standards, and improved the technology infrastructure with the addition of a new central plant. The project included a new vertical transportation system, environmental delivery system and security components. SPF:a worked closely with the Getty security team to encapsulate the campus in a highly sophisticated security infrastructure.
