THE SAND CASTLE HOUSE
Ridge Rock, California 2005

Sand gathered from around the site is used to fill sheets of double pane glass. The use of this material allows the house to blend in with the surrounding desert landscape in material, texture, and color.

The Sand Castle is located in a sometimes harsh desert climate, and there will be the occasional desire to seal the interior living space off from the outdoors. This is accomplished in one of two ways, if the house is to be vacant for some time, a series of folding glass doors are closed to completely seal off the interior living space, protecting the interior space and furnishings from dust and weathering.

Secondly, if the house is occupied various portions of it may be enclosed through a system of translucent panels which, when not in use, slide behind the sand filled glass panels. Each of these secondary translucent panels may be operated independently, so that various portions of the home can become more or less private and protected from the environment depending on the mood of the inhabitants.
