PERTH AMBOY HIGH SCHOOL
Perth Amboy, New Jersey 2003 Competition

The average student spends 5,000 hours in high school on campus. With a vision for creating a more vital and fruitful experience, SPF:architects proposed to create a safe place with interior & exterior breakout areas, creating multiple layers of space, and dually juxtapose the themes of survival and identity, which are so prevalent for students in this age group. The concept is executed both through perforations in the space and through a variety of textures, colors and variations of terra cotta, historical to the region and sustainable materially. Transparency is utilized for natural light, safety and connection to the community. Group the academics around a central cluster (instructional commons) to foster interaction, responsibility and respect between students of different academic tracks. A certain amount of collision of thought is inspired by the circulation paths, promoting community interaction by utilizing the notion of penetration – penetration by the exterior on the interior and vice versa.
