Creative Campus Design | SPF:a Office Architecture
The Intent Behind Place
At SPF:a, we believe that workplaces should be more than buildings, they should be platforms for interaction, innovation, and culture. When we took on the project at WE3 at Water’s Edge in Playa Vista, it wasn’t simply about designing an office tower, it was about crafting a campus experience. The site, stretched across 160,000 ft², challenged us to weave together architecture, community, and daylight in new ways.
Designing Work & Well‑being
Work environments are evolving, and so are we at SPF:a. At WE3, we embraced design strategies that support well‑being: a perforated metal skin filters sunlight, operable windows invite fresh air, and a sky garden offers a respite above the bustle. These aren’t mere features; they represent our belief that architecture should nourish both productivity and human experience.
Place, Flow, and Identity
A campus is more than a collection of buildings, it’s a network of spaces that invite movement, pause, and connection. In this project we bracketed the main building with open quadrangles and a relocated soccer pitch, weaving building form and landscape into a unified whole. Through that, we at SPF:a created a place that anchors identity, not just tenancy.
Materiality as Culture
Every element of a workplace contributes to its culture. At WE3, the exposed concrete superstructure, generous floor‑heights, and uninterrupted glazing communicate transparency and robustness. By choosing material honesty, we let the building speak its own language, an ethos that guides our work at SPF:a across typologies.
Flexibility for Future Change
The modern office can’t be static. We design with flexibility in mind, open floor plates, multiple circulation paths, and adaptable systems. At WE3, the design anticipates change in work‑styles and technologies. For us at SPF:a, designing for longevity means designing for change, not rigidity.
Campus Beyond the Building
We envision the creative workplace as a campus in the fullest sense: indoor and outdoor, formal and informal, work and pause. The sky‑garden terrace, external staircases and shaded balconies at WE3 are deliberate intersections of architecture and landscape, spaces where culture is formed, not just accommodated.
Conclusion
When we at SPF:a design creative campuses, we aren’t simply fulfilling brief. We are shaping environments that foster identity, movement, and meaning. The workplace becomes not just a destination, but a civic space in miniature, where architecture supports human potential.
