Prior to the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, LACMA West planned a renovation to the historic building on the LACMA campus that was purchased from the old May Company department store chain in 1999.
The project included exhibition galleries, video labs, print/drawing/photography study centers, food services, a bookstore, design store, art storage, libraries, a board room and administrative offices for the entire museum. The rigid design of the existing building provides a marked contract for what should be an industrial intervention, meant to house these many different functions.
The intervention will address infrastructure upgrades, programmatic area designs, circulation, FF&E package, and exterior upgrades. Per the client, the design is efficient, logical, cost-effective and planned for a 20-year life.
